All You Need To Know About Sidewalk Violation Inspections

The laws of New York City are quite clear concerning sidewalk construction in self-owned properties. The law requires the private property holders to construct, reconstruct, repair and repave the sidewalk adjacent to their properties. It is under their jurisdiction to follow the sidewalk guidelines and make sure that it is constructed in synchronization with the rest of the sidewalk and not extended in an irregular fashion. Section 7-210 of the New York City Administrative Code makes property owners potentially liable for personal injuries caused by their failure to maintain reasonably safe sidewalks. Property owners are supposed to keep their paths clean at all times and are also accountable for snow removal.

Sidewalk violation is an official notice issued by the authorities to the owners in case the construction has any irregularities. It could be anything ranging from a trip hazard to the collapsed sidewalk, patchwork or poorly done sloping of the street. When such inconsistencies come into the limelight, the officials inspect the area. There is no fine for these issues, but the owner certainly needs to take care of the pinpointed problem and make sure that the work is done without any delay. The officials encourage the timely repair of these areas, as they can be hazardous to the passers-by as well as the property owners themselves.

In case the owner feels that these issues have unnecessarily cropped up or someone else is responsible for taking care of these things, then they can directly bring this to the notice of the authorities. You can also ask for the re-inspection of the said properties. A re-inspection as the name suggests is a second sidewalk violation inspection by a different inspector. The notification of the re-inspection is sent a few days in advance so that you can be prepared. Inspectors appointed for the task do not come to your door, as they are not allowed to inform property owners when conducting re-inspections. This act is the final check. The results of the re-inspection are mailed once the report is filed duly with the office.
